A Belgravia Family Home – redesigned…
Tucked away in the heart of a conservation area in Belgravia, this family house is surrounded by London charm — rows of cream-painted townhouses, smart black railings and window boxes brimming with flowers.
The brief was clear: we were to create a calm and comfortable family home, equally suited to a lively spaniel, visiting grandparents, or a house full of energetic boys and their friends — all while offering quiet corners for working from home, reading a book, and hosting business meetings.
First impressions are important: the entrance hall was designed to be warm and welcoming with small details which make a strong and lasting impact.
A sunshine-yellow seat pad brightens the vintage bench. The black front door and bold picture frame stand in striking contrast to panelled walls in Skylight by Farrow & Ball. The original herringbone wood floor was restored, sanded, and stained to a deep, rich tone using Treatex.
In the dining area, chairs found at auction were reupholstered in a rich velvet from Romo, which complements the gentle tone of the walls.
Vintage plates are carefully displayed on the walls for visual impact. We also mixed in new items for example the Jim Lawrence console and Pooky wall lights with Fermoie shades.
The kitchen was transformed from a modern style in mustard yellow and green to a classic shaker-style in Blue Gray by Farrow & Ball. The result is a timeless look; all while retaining the cabinet carcasses and reducing waste.
I like to keep the kitchen, the heart of the family home, calm so we painted it in calming School House White by Farrow & Ball but added detail through accessories and a very pretty block printed Penny Morrison table cloth. We reupholstered the antique chairs thereby breathing life in to old belongings.
The bright garden sitting area has doors on to the garden. We added layers of pattern to add depth and elegance . A bespoke sofa in Lee Jofa chenille, an ottoman in Nina Campbell stripes, and a hand block printed linen with embroidered detail for the curtains bring a wonderful blend of textures, while walls in School House White from Farrow and Ball offer a calm backdrop.
The drawing room is light and bright and designed to feel calm and sophisticated. Using a combination of classic seagrass walling, aqua and green tones, patterned upholstery and beautiful art we created a comfortable and elegant space for visitors.
A twin bedroom, perfect for guests or children, has a pretty blend of GP & J Baker prints with Fermoie fabrics and again, skylight by Farrow & Ball on the walls. The vintage prints were sourced from Etalage and the bedside table with pretty bobbin legs was from Chelsea Textiles.
The master bedroom exudes serenity — a Pukka Print block printed headboard edged in velvet, soft linen curtains, and bespoke lampshades. The compact bathroom already had striking marble tiles; we refreshed these through careful restoration.
Lastly, the boys’ atmospheric den is painted in a bold, warming blue. The bespoke cosy bunks and charming Fermoie curtains offer a supremely comfortable hideaway which, including the concealed trundle and sofa bed, actually sleeps 4.
Every element in this house was chosen to balance beauty, function and longevity whilst not forgetting the family’s personality.
