Alpine Retreat

We recently completed an eighteen month full renovation of this Alpine chalet, redesigning the four floors which traditionally had the bedrooms on the top floor and the living space below.

The living spaces have now been designed across the top floors, with new, larger windows allowing views across the mountains and providing bright Alpine light to flood the rooms.

We chose traditional local stone for the new chimney, and ‘Vieux bois doree’ aged wood for a classic chalet style. The upholsteries are soft in texture and light in tone for a contemporary style, coupled with a bright raspberry geometric for the cushions and ottoman – a playful Kit Kemp fabric from Christopher Farr Cloth. The raspberry braid on the edge of the curtains echos the colour theme.

There are Alpine details, such as a large antler chandelier, soft fur Alrae armchairs sourced from Andrew Martin, and classic wooden skis found from a local brocante.

In contrast the kitchen is contemporary in style, with light tones and clean lines. This is typically French contemporary in style, and the Alpine theme continues with cow hide chairs and a bespoke timber TV cabinet and bookcase which is both aesthetic and practical.

The ski room is practical and warm, with unnatural flooring which is washable, and lots of storage for mountain pursuits, hooks, cupboards, boot warmers and ski and boot racks.

We designed and installed a bespoke stair carpet with Peter Page London, a wool herringbone flat weave with smart striped blue detailed edge. This gave a sophisticated feel tying in beautifully with the colour palette for the bedrooms.

All of the soft furnishings were designed and supplied by us. We chose this beautiful wool embroidered stag themed fabric from GP and J Baker for the headboard, the main focal point in the room. It’s soft, smart and in keeping with Alpine living. The headboard was piped in sophisticated velvet and coupled with bespoke cushions.

The timber bunk beds were a must as space is always at a premium in the Alps. Traditionally built in timber and with lighting and soft wool cushions for cosiness.

We chose Cow wall lights and deep red popple fabric from Soane Britain for the headboard in the master bedroom. The soft linen curtains are calm and contemporary, with a pretty tassel detailed edge, allowing the wood and the view of the mountains to take precedence.
