Classic, timeless, and effortlessly chic, marble is the last word in luxury, and never more so than when designing an en-suite bathroom. We often use Carrara marble from Italy in our schemes, as it works well with both modern, minimalist interiors as well as more classic traditional schemes. The natural stone lends itself to bathroom design due to its waterproof properties and resilience, and as bespoke material it can be cut to fit to ensure a seamless finish.
In this recent City penthouse project the brief was to design three en-suite bathrooms with marble throughout. Working on the tenth floor of an apartment block in the grounds of a World Heritage site, with only pedestrianised access, presented a few logistical challenges but our highly professional master craftsmen were unfazed, even if it meant laying our their workshop on the roof terrace.
We worked with smaller scale tiles rather than larger slabs. These work better in a smaller scale environment as the tiles are less likely to crack with any movement within the building.
Five pallets of 20mm Carrara marble tiles were sorted by hand to choose the best pieces for the project, and then individually selected to book match the veins and natural markings as closely as possible to create a truly seamless effect. (photo credit Alexander John Interiors)
